Fiji, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, is also a place where stories of resilience and dedication flourish. One such story is that of Jane Savou, a beacon of hope for many through her work with the Spinal Injury Association of Fiji (SIA). Her journey, marked by passion and commitment, exemplifies the profound impact of the Vodafone World of Difference (WoD) program, a volunteer initiative by the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.

Volunteer to Visionary: Jane Savou's Journey of Impact and Legacy

Jane Savou's involvement with the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation began in September 2023, when she joined as a professional part-time volunteer. Jane Savou's journey as a part-time professional volunteer with Vodafone World of Difference began when she took over the baton from Roneet Prasad, who had been leading in capacity building and storytelling within the organization since 2016. Roneet's departure to pursue new opportunities marked a transition period for the team. As they awaited the opening of the Vodafone World of Difference expression of interest in January 2024, Jane stepped up to fill the gap, bringing her own unique perspective and dedication to the cause. Her willingness to take on this responsibility exemplifies her commitment to making a difference in her community, and her subsequent selection as a WoD candidate in March 2024 is a testament to her passion for creating positive change. Her exceptional work ethic and genuine compassion for her community did not go unnoticed. In March 2024, she was selected as a Vodafone World of Difference candidate, transitioning from part-time to full-time involvement. This program allows volunteers to dedicate themselves to the charity of their choice, making significant contributions to the causes they are passionate about.

She carries forward Mr. Wakaniyasi's vision of transformative change, ensuring that his work in delivering over $30 million worth of mobility devices and services to Fiji continues to thrive. Similarly, she embraces Mr. Prasad's ethos of effective communication and storytelling, using her platform to raise awareness and inspire others to join the cause. Stepping into the Shoes of a Visionary Leader

Jane's journey took a pivotal turn when she stepped into the role of Executive Officer at SIA, succeeding the late Mr. Joshko Wakaniyasi. Mr. Wakaniyasi, a respected figure in the field of disability advocacy, had been closely affiliated with the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation since 2009. Under his and Mere Rodans mentorship, Jane's capacity and leadership skills were significantly enhanced, preparing her to take on this critical role.

Transformative Partnerships and Lifesaving Assistance

The partnership between SIA, Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation, and PhysioNet UK has been instrumental in transforming countless lives. Through this collaboration, shipments valued at over $30m million have been brought into Fiji, providing essential mobility equipment and services to individuals with disabilities. This influx of resources has been crucial in enhancing the quality of life for many, offering them independence and hope. Jane's role within SIA is multifaceted. As the coordinator of the Mobility Device Service program, she conducts assessments, prescribes, and fits assistive devices following the WHO 8 steps of Wheelchair Provision. Her responsibilities extend to managing SIA’s operations, ensuring the provision of appropriate assistive devices and medical consumables to various institutions and individuals across Fiji.

Expanding Horizons: Community Outreach and International Collaboration

Jane’s work is not confined to the distribution of physical aids. She actively participates in community outreach programs in collaboration with organizations like the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation and United Blind Persons. These initiatives raise awareness and distribute assistive devices, reaching even the most marginalized communities.

Moreover, SIA’s partnership network is ever-expanding. PhysioNet UK remains the largest donor, while the Pacific Rehab Foundation NZ contributes through training and product provision. Recently, a trial partnership with "Hearts, Hands and Wheels" from Australia has been established, promising further donations of electric wheelchairs, walkers, and commodes. Discussions are also underway to extend support to other Pacific Islands, including Samoa, Tonga, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

Advocacy and Empowerment: A Holistic Approach

Jane's dedication extends beyond providing physical support. As a member of the Election Disability Access Working Group (EDAWG), she addresses issues related to electoral accessibility, ensuring that persons with disabilities receive necessary support during elections. Her involvement with the Fiji Paralympic Committee (FPC) further underscores her commitment to inclusivity, encouraging participation in sports.

The technicians at SIA, under Jane’s leadership, work tirelessly to assess individuals and provide necessary assistance. Their mission transcends physical support, aiming to empower individuals and families, ease their burdens, and offer hope for a brighter future. Jane advocates for health and the prevention of accidents and disabilities, urging collective efforts to ensure that no one is left behind.
