Holi, rooted in Hindu tradition, symbolises the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. It is a time to forgive, renew relationships, and spread joy. In Fiji, where the Indo-Fijian community forms a significant part of the population, Holi is a much-anticipated event that transcends cultural boundaries.

How Fiji Celebrates Holi

Across the islands, communities gather in temples, schools, and open grounds, ready to be drenched in a kaleidoscope of colours. The celebrations often begin with Holika Dahan—a bonfire the night before Holi, symbolising the burning away of negativity. The following day, people of all ages take to the streets, playfully smearing coloured powder (gulal) on each other, exchanging sweets like gujiya, and enjoying traditional music and dance.
