 FIJI’S CHINESE COMMUNITY

2022 marks the 167th anniversary of the first arrival of Chinese people in Fiji. The history of Chinese people coming to Fiji is said to date back to the year 1855, when the first Chinese immigrant, known as Moy Ba Ling or Huang Lee, is said to have arrived in Fiji, via sailboat from Australia.

Moy Ba Long is said to have initially settled in Levuka, before returning to China and then bringing relatives and some ofter Chinese people back to settle in Fiji, establishing the first Chinese-Fijian community.

Chinese people continued to immigrate to Fiji throughout the late 19th and the 20th centuries, establishing communities in various parts of the country and investing in the retail and agricultural/ farming industries, as well as establishing restaurants, bakeries and other food outlets - thus contributing to Fiji’s varied, multicultural cuisine.
